Desc: Journey Through Smyrna: Directed by Chrysovalantis Stamelos. Smyrna: The Pearl of the Aegean. Once the home of Alexander the Great and Homer, then the Paris of the Eastern Mediterranean. A city of unparalleled beauty and rich culture, only to be left in flames by the end of World War 1. Today, it is known as the The Great Catastrophe of Smyrna, forcing a migration of Anatolia's 1.5 million strong Greek Christian community and the traces of their centuries-old culture. Many of those who escaped the ravaging fire saw their last moments on the city's waterfront known as the Smyrna Quay. This site holds great significance for those that hold roots to the city unshaken over the past century. In 2015, 93 years later, the light of that community, along with its language and heritage, will be reignited through the power of music, faith, and friendship with Greek and Turkish singers and musicians who will hold a first-ever live concert on the Smyrna Quay, celebrating the city's culture. Journey Through Smyrna documents an eclectic music group, NeaBanda, as they prepare to re-ignite the city's multicultural heritage in hopes of creating a new beginning of cultural freedom and tolerance within the Aegean region. The film documents the group as they prepare to hold a concert on the historical waterfront of the city, which is also the location of where thousands of Smyrna Greeks had died. In addition, they set out around the city holding street performances with the aim to bring the two sides together in destroying the century-old feud.
